Portuguese are very passionate about their cuisine and their rich diet makes that evident. If one has to discuss the cuisine and food habits of the Portuguese people, the most significant aspect which has to be mentioned in the first place is wine. Portuguese wine is famous for its taste and quality world wide and Portugal boasts of some of the best vineyards accumulating wine and is one of the most prominent wine producers of the world. In the classical period Portugal has been a part of the Roman Empire and one can be reminded here of the mythical figure of the roman god Bacchus who was known as Dionysus in the Greek deist structure. They were god of wine and merriment. This is from were we can associate the long term bond between Portugal and wine. Wine is named according to the names of the regions they are produced in Portugal. One of the best quality wines obtained from Portugal is the Porto wine which is collected from Porto region. Other eminent wines from Portugal include Madeira wine, Vinho do Douro, Vinho do Dao, Vinho Alentejo, Vinho Verde etc. huge amounts of Portuguese wine are exported world wide.
The country of Portugal is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the south and west and so it is only natural that much of their diet will comprise of fish meat. Therefore it is found that they enjoy caldeirada, sardines and cod and there are various recipes of these fishes which make up their menu. However, it is also necessary to mention that they enjoy other non vegetarian food as well like pork, beef, chicken and lamb. These meat preparations are often consumed by applying them as add ons with sandwiches. Also, it should be referred to here that the Portuguese art of making pastry is also very well known and are well loved all over.
